The Santa Rita mine has been around for a long time. The mexicans rented the mines to Sylvester Pattie, whose American methods enabled him to derive from them a profit unknown to their former operators.
I really enjoyed reading the book - the personal narrative of James Ohio Pattie, although it is heartbreaking to read of their difficulties.
Do you know what eventually happened to James Ohio Pattie? This information has been difficult to find.

This is wonderful Liza. Though I knew your family has always been important to you, I did not realize how often family members have inspired or shown up in your work. How lucky to have come from such a rich line of story-tellers--and to be passing that tradition on to your grandchildren.
